The Frank Welker Podcast

The Frank Welker Podcast NewbsRadio

Frank Welker was always a guy…

I wanted to focus on for NewbsRadio.  In fact, focusing on this guy was one of the O.G. ideas I had when philosophizing on how NewbsRadio would work.  He’s truly had one of the most amazing careers in Hollywood, though most people don’t even know who he is.  Which is a crime.  Or should be.  So sit back and let me tell you about Frank Welker for a bit and then we’ll end up hitting oh I don’t know… Michael J Fox?  And just maybe our studio will be infiltrated by an evil source?  And then, just maybe we’ll have 100.5 The Peak’s James Sutton stop by just for good measure?  All in all, this was a pretty fun show to put together.  Hope you enjoy it!  Ohhhhhhhhhh yeeeeeeah!

The Tom Petty Podcast

When preparing a Tom Petty podcast…

You’ve got to do your homework.  We here at NewbsRadio celebrate the man’s entire catalog so it was pretty easy for us to wax poetic.  Tom Petty is one of these guys that was meant for rocking your socks literally off, he did it in the 70s and as far as one Newb who attended the Pemberton Music Festival a few years back can tell, he’s continuing to send people to the cleaners to… clean their socks… off.  Because they’ve been literally rocked… off.  And the ground is dirty.  That was kind of a stretch, but this episode sure isn’t – this map is rock solid – as any map including Tom Petty should be.  Petty now has Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure on the ol’ XM Radio which you can listen to if you actually have satellite radio, and that got us thinking.  Why would anyone have satellite radio?  No really, we thought what if we were to compose a map that included only rockers who have totally rocked socks off their entire careers and who have now been blessed with their own radio shows?  There’s got to be a whole schwack of them by now.  And we were right.

So here it is, the DJ Tom Petty Episode of NewbsRadio.  Just to catch you up, we REALLY like this music video for Tom Petty‘s “Into the Great Wide Open” so you should Deppenetly watch it as a remedial requirement of listening to this episode.

Cults Tour Hits Vancouver

Cults the band Live Vancouver Venue Spectres Jody Glenham

It takes a lot for us to leave the house these days.  See, in Vancouver, unless you’re paid to be somewhere it’s almost impossible to justify going out.  With the cost of living so high, you have to keep your budget tight on paid fun times.  Personally, I have a chart on my fridge to keep track of my fun vs cheese ratio.  I measure the cost of living in cheese because it’s so damn expensive for SOME reason, but it’s also quite tasty.  If I have too much fun, then I have to cut back on cheese and if I have too much cheese, well, that NEVER happens.

So when my bud Ruby came through town with the band Cults I ended up with some guest-list action and a photo pass.  That is the kind of deal that gets me out of the house – bands take note.  Here are the best photos from the night:

Cults consists of two main members Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion so my photos aptly reflect this, however they do tour with a full band to fill out their sound.  The night opened with local songstress Jody Glenham who was accompanied by Matthew Barber and then Leeds’ Spectrals took the middle spot.

But what of their connections?  Well here is a convoluted and ultimately personal one: Cults’ Madeline Follin once played in an incarnation of the band Youth Gone Mad.  Youth Gone Mad was originally formed in the early 80s by a guy named Paul “ENA” Kostabi who would eventually end up in White Zombie.  Now Paul has a brother named Mark Kostabi who is an artist who designed the cover of Guns ‘n Roses’ Use Your Illusion records and the last Ramones record Adios Amigos.  Joey and Dee-Dee Ramone were also members of Youth Gone Mad but that’s not the best way I can connect back to this Cults performance this particular evening.  Going through Guns ‘n Roses, you’d have to remember that in our Appetite to Appetite episode we referenced how Sly Stone used to be neighbours with Duff McKagan before G ‘n R broke.  Sly and the Family Stone included his sister Rose Stone who was featured in the Coen Brothers’ flick The Ladykillers which included as always, a cameo by Bruce Campbell who of course has made a career out of cameos.  Another notable cameo was Campbell’s portrayal of the the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills in Escape from L.A. which, on the soundtrack included a song penned by Rob Zombie BUT also included Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.“.  And during the show on Monday, Spectrals’ singer Louis Oliver Jones started off the set alone singing in a way that made my friend Theo turn to me and say “This guy’s voice reminds me of that movie soundtrack singer guy’s voice.”  Yep. He meant Randy Newman.  We did it.

You can listen to 4 new Cults tracks for free here: The Official Cults Website

You can hear Spectrals here: Spectrals Myspace Page

And you can hear Jody Glenham here:  Jody Glenham Music on Myspace

Thanks again for the invite Ruby!  See you next time.

Take care.

The Nine Inch Nails Podcast

The Nine Inch Nails Podcast NewbsRadio

For the Nine Inch Nails Podcast…

…we had to brush up on our Canadian rock chops because we managed to fit into this week’s map, author and BidiniBand frontman Dave Bidini who, of course, spearheaded the Rheostatics.  I say of course because if you don’t know who the Rheostatics are, you must have skipped the first chapter in your Canadian Rock 101 reader.  So how in the world do get from Nine Inch Nails to the Rheostatics?  Well let’s just say that it never would have happened without White Out™.  For added confusion we somehow hit the Talking Heads, the Modern Lovers, the Minor Threat, and the Monkees for good measure.

Thanks again to Dave Bidini for helping sort all this out, you can check out BidiniBand on iTunes by way of clicking all these words you are reading now.

While you are there, you can also subscribe to this very podcast and rate us too!  We love to hear your feedback on the first 20 some odd shows we have floating around cyberspace™.

The Alfred Hitchcock Podcast

The Alfred Hitchcock Podcast Star Trek Carl Sagan Playboy Magazine Bartosz Bos

The Alfred Hitchcock podcast…

…appeared to let us combine two of our favourite things ever, which is why we loved making it so much, those things: Star Trek and Playboy magazine.  Yep, the two seemingly most distant pieces of matter in the entire universe can be connected through one step in our map – you’ll have to take a listen to hear what it is.  Also in this episode we have NewbsRadio‘s bud, and additive manufacturing guru, Bartosz Bos.  You’ll have to also take a listen to hear what this guy does for a living.  We will also do the unthinkable and link Carl Sagan to Playboy magazine as well, though if you’re smart like us, you might already have an idea how we do that.

It’s an episode sans music this week, a clue to be sure to this crazy map where we start with Sir Alfred Hitchcock and end with him as if nothing ever happened except the time that has passed.  We hope you enjoy that time and this episode!

We’ve had some reviews lately on the iTunes site!  Thanks to: Kristalline, drludovici and local124 for your comments and ratings.  It really helps us rank over on iTunes so more people can figure out what the heck we’re doing over here.

Take care!

The Wilco Podcast

Wilco Podcast Live Vancouver NewbsRadio Glenn Kotche

The Wilco Podcast

We’ve been waiting SO PATIENTLY to put this episode out.  We actually had it scheduled for next episode but we felt that it would have been cruel to make you wait longer.  So the pieces all came together, if you remember, we went to the Wilco show, we talked with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, we reviewed the show and shot photos to accompany our coverage.  Thank you to Wilco and their management, Glenn Kotche and his people for allowing us the time to get some great content for this episode and of course engineer/editor Rob Malowany for doing all the legwork AND coming up with the map.

But we didn’t stop there.  Also appearing in this episode we have Fond of Tigers’ Stephen Lyons.  The Juno award winning musician ends up saving the day as he becomes an integral part of our map as we go from Wilco to Wilco.

What About Bob? Podcast

What About Bob Podcast Bill Murray Tom Hanks Leslie Nielsen NewbsRadio

Welcome back!  If you’re following along at home, you know that we’ve crested the fulcrum of season 1 and it’s all downhill from here.  Last season we enjoyed a visit from Santa, co-host David Newberry was clinically dead for about a minute, we had Alan Cross, Dan Leroy, Lee Newby, Seema Narula, Sarah MacDougall, Corbin Murdoch, Karyn Ellis and Doctor Newbinski just to name some past guests.  You can go back and listen to any of season 1 by either subscribing to our back catalog on iTunes by clicking subscribe up top, or you can single out an episode with the episode index drop down menu.  It really doesn’t matter, though if you subscribe you won’t have to do anything, pixies hand deliver the episodes into your iTunes through black magic I’m sure.

So that brings us to season 2!  This season we have planned some exciting new things for NewbsRadio, but you’ll have to listen to find out what I mean.  In our first episode we are focusing on the classic Bill Murray comedy, What About Bob?.  From there we go through Tom Hanks’ the Burbs, Dazed and Confused, Adventures in Babysitting, Airplane! to get back to What About Bob? as if by magic (see pixies reference above).

The difference this time around is that we will be accompanied for the entire ride by comedian and bonafide Episcopalian (citation needed), Vancouver‘s own, Ben Mills.

If you are a newb to NewbsRadio, if you head down to the bottom right you can like us on Facebook and/or follow us on Twitter.  We tend to post to both rather regularly and love to RT funny stuff you post.  So there’s that.

Looking forward to another season of NewbsRadio!  Hope you are too!

New Look! New Season Starts Wednesday!

Decided to spend the day updating this site, so if you have been in today, you might have noticed the state of disarray, but I finished up and took the shop-vac to it so I think it’s pretty cleaned up.  If you notice any broken links send us a tweet or something.  Our What About Bob? episode will be out on Wednesday.  We used the comedic help of comedian Ben Mills to spice it up a bit.  In this map we end up all over the place, Tom Hanksthe Burbs to just name drop one.  In this classic scene below, Tom (Ray) and his wife Carol (Carrie Fisher) are over at the new neighbour’s house trying their best to be neighbourly.  When pretzels and sardines are passed around the foley guy must have had a lot of fun with the sounds of sardines squishing in Tom Hanks‘ mouth.  I drop reference to this part of the movie in the episode so you might as well get geared up by watching it now.

See you on Wednesday! Oh and add us on the the twitter/facebook by clicking on the appropriate pop-up button at the bottom of the window.

Take care!
